About
From a few thousand feet in the air, familiar landscapes take on an alluring quality. Large-scale patterns emerge, while details previously hidden are revealed.
Most of these paintings are based on photos I took in a four-seat plane while traveling throughout the Western US. Flying “low and slow,” the view enriches my experience of living in the Pacific Northwest, providing another way of understanding the land I walk on, drive through and paddle around.
While traveling in this way, I am moved to make drawings and paintings that capture the patterns and textures I see - both for the joy of working with colors and as a way of absorbing what I experience.

This series has also served as an opportunity to explore new materials and looser ways of working. Using layers of waxy, water-based crayons, brush-tip markers, and richly pigmented colored pencils, I’ve discovered mixed-media options that continue to intrigue me.
Finished art should not languish in a drawer – so instead I offer it to you as an invitation to join me in ‘high adventure.’ I hope you experience both the sense of movement and the peace of seeing the landscape stretching out before you.
